Hiatal hernia surgery information
A hernia occurs when an internal body part
protrudes into another area in the abdomen. A hiatal hernia occurs
when the stomach pushes up into the chest through the opening in
the diagram. Most of the time people do not actually experience symptoms
of their hiatal hernia so no treatment is needed. However, if there
is a chance of the hernia becoming restricted or strangled then surgery
is necessary. Today, hiatal hernia surgery can be done laparoscopically
with five or six small incisions into the abdomen. The advantages
of this hiatal hernia surgery are smaller incisions, rapid recovery,
less pain and scarring, and less of a risk for infection. Unfortunately,
even with surgery, there is no guarantee that the hernia will not
come back.
