PERSONAL BIO
Dr. Summers was born on Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina. He grew up on Air Force bases throughout the United States. He attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island where he was an honors graduate. He attended the University of Virginia School of Medicine, earning an MD and PhD in the Medical Scientist Training Program. He completed his general surgery training at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Dr. Summers began his career in academic surgery as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He taught medical students and residents, did research on the cell physiology of the intestinal tract, and supervised residents in the intensive care unit.
After three year, Dr. Summers left teaching for private surgical practice and joined the Medford Clinic, a large multispecialty group in Medford, Oregon. Unfortunately, this 70 year old clinic went bankrupt and Dr. Summers took a temporary position at the VA Medical Center in Spokane, Washington.
Dr. Summers joined the Coast Surgical Group in 2003. His special interests are intestinal surgery, surgery of the pancreas and biliary system, advanced laparoscopic surgery, breast surgery and complicated wound management.
