PERSONAL BIO
Dr. Yifan (Tony) Yang was born in Inner Mongolia, China, and immigrated to the United States with his family at the age of 10. He spent much of his childhood in San Diego and graduated from Torrey Pines High School.
He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology, graduating cum laude from the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Yang then pursued his medical degree at Harvard Medical School, completing his training through the prestigious Harvard–MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology program.
Dr. Yang returned to California to complete his general surgery residency at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. He is board-certified in general surgery and has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) since 2014.
In addition to his surgical expertise, Dr. Yang has held significant leadership roles, including serving as Chief of Surgery at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Chula Vista. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing surgical care and promoting quality outcomes within the institution.
Dr. Yang's clinical interests span a wide range of general surgery, including benign and malignant breast disease, biliary disease, hernia repair, foregut surgery, gastric cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer, and anorectal disorders. He specializes in minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery and is recognized as an early adopter of robotic techniques. As of 2025, he has successfully performed over 1,500 robotic-assisted surgeries using the Da Vinci Surgical System—ranging from routine procedures to complex, high-risk cases.
Outside of his professional accomplishments, Dr. Yang enjoys spending quality time with his wife and four children. The family loves to travel and explore the diverse cultural and outdoor activities that San Diego offers.
Fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese, Dr. Yang is able to connect with a wide range of patients, providing clear communication and compassionate care.
